2013-10-31: Day 36/Day 1 - Slovakia weekend
Start of a long weekend and I finally decide what I'm doing and book some tickets and hotels. Not the ideal way around of doing things but the only way I could make it even remotely work.
Head out for a spot of lunch at a small local style cafe and then on to Kerepesi cemetery to wander around. There is a huge difference in the scale and pomposity of the memorials as well as a sizable amount of very new work. 2012 was the most recent date I saw but there was clearly lots of rework.
There follows a Slovak sojourn.
Caught the train to Košice. Some night, or late afternoon if you're in the dregs of October, trains you can still see lots and it can be picturesque... this one just had windows on to darkness. Couldn't see a thing. This made knowing when to get off problematic. Now I knew the approximate time and that it was the last stop so I wasn't as lost as some but when you stop somewhere 30 mins before your expected stop and sit for 10 mins one is not without some level of mild concern.
But we started moving again and in the same direction, arrived bang on time. Met a witch at the station but I took it manfully in my stride and found hotel just in time to make sure the restaurant staff worked every second of their shift.... Mr Popular.
I did have a pea soup and potato pancake wrapped around duck liver and a red wine sauce cooked with farmers (stinky) cheese though which was pretty.
